HF: Can you tell us about yourself? Where you were born and where you
currently reside?
RY: My name is Reyna Young A.K.A (Miss Misery) and I am 24 years old, I was
born and raised in San Francisco and currently living in San Francisco, my office is
located in Berkeley.
HF: What are your earliest recollections of the horror genre?
RY: When I was young I remember watching my first Horror movie which was
John Carpenters Halloween and I fell in love with being scared. The music the way
I felt during certain moments of the movie. It gave me chills and for some odd
reason I loved it. Ever since then I had gotten into reading a lot of Edgar Allan Poe
and watching the old Horror movies like Dracula and Frankenstein the cool
classics that i still love and enjoy today.
HF: What brought you into the film making? What made you decide that you
wanted to start making movies?
RY: A friend of mine Tony V was making his own movie and had asked me to
help since we use to have acting class's together during High School and he knew
how much I was into movies. Well anyway he was filming his own movie with a
bunch of our friends and when i was helping he had ma take over some scenes
and when I was directing and working with the actors I got into it and after that
decided wow I can make my own movies. So I went out and bought a camera,
wrote a script, bought Film making for Dummies and started shooting in no time.
HF: Being an independent film maker yourself, what are your feelings toward
guerrilla movie making?
RY: We love it, we also try to help support our friends who do movie making.
Being so low budget and having to work with what we have and our imagination I
say is better then if we had the money. I'm all for anyone who desires it enough
to not care whether they have the money or not, Just do it. Make whatever your
heart desires and don't stop just because you don't feel you have the money to
do it...
HF: Let's talk about your first short here for a sec; Confession. How long did it
take you to write it and where did you get the idea for it?
RY: Ahhhh Confession... Well it took me no more then a week to film it to be
honest. I had the idea in my head for a long time about doing this short about
getting into the mind of a serial killer and what he thinks. I always see these
movies where the killer kills they're victim and then hides the body or eats them
which ever and why did he do it I don't know? I want to know what goes on
through his mind as he does it and why he does it. So I wrote my own the way I
wanted to do it. I think it's one of my best writing actually. Everyone seems to
love it. Part 2 and 3 will be coming out soon. I decided to make a little trilogy...
HF: Now about your other short film, Sinner. How did you come up with that one
and where do you find these actors?
RY: Sinner was a short I had written in High School right after a break up. I got
cheated on and dumped. It kinda ached at me and one night I turned on my
computer and started typing. It just kinda flowed out of me and when I had
stopped and read it I was like wow I wrote this. I literally said that. I must of
been pissed off. I knew Jennifer Burket the lead Actress in the short for awhile
through High School and also Dylan Walsh who plays the boyfriend who is
also the star of Confession. I normally just use my friends.
HF: After viewing both Confession and Sinner I realized that you had a way with
words. Your written dialog is very strong. Do you write any poetry? If so, do you
incorporate that into your films?
RY: Ever since I was younger I have written Poetry. Um mostly dark stuff but yes
I do try to put that into my movies a little bit. I try not to make anything I write
too poetic in my scripts but yes I do add somewhat of my poetry.
HF: What projects are you working on now. What can we soon expect from
Reyna Young and Last Doorway Productions?
RY: Upcoming Projects is I am shooting a 20 minute short called Doll Murder
Spree. Starring Adam Richardson and I myself will be in it. Confession Trilogy will
be done soon and A zombie short is coming way and I have written so many
exciting scripts I can't wait to get to. I write at least three short scripts a week. I
never stop I have binders galore filled with scripts I'm waiting to get to.
HF: What do you think about the current wave of horror films? Do you have any
recent favorites?
RY: The recent wave of Horror films seem to be remakes and remakes and are
getting tired to me, recently there really hasn't been anything that I have been
into. Hm let me think... No nothing comes to mind i must say I'm waiting for
something new and original to come out. I fell in love with the Zodiac movie
though; wow was that good. I even got to meet Robert Greysmith who wrote
the book the movie was based on. That was a wish come true I swear
I was so nervous. I'm usually not. Oh and I'm waiting for the Halloween Remake
by Rob Zombie, that looks pretty good.
HF: What about least favorites? Are there any recent ones that you cannot bear
to watch again?
RY: Like I said before remakes just aren't my thing right now and the worst one
I've seen was Black Christmas. Please people what were you thinking. I give the
Director credit for doing his thing and making a movie and all that hard work that
is put into it. But it just didn't interest me at all. I love the original so much that
the new one didn't do it for me.
HF: Thank you so much for your time Reyna, we're looking forward to seeing
what you brings us next. Do you have any final words? Perhaps a message to our
readers at Horror-Fanatics?
RY: The only thing I would like to say in closing is for everyone out there to live
your dream. Don't pay attention to the negativity of others if you have a goal
then go for it. I mean no matter how low budget you are don't let it stop you.
Pick up a camera and go for your dreams.
