Story: A sorority house is terrorized by a stranger who makes frightening
phone calls and then murders the sorority sisters during Christmas break.
Review:
Black Christmas was directed by Bob Clark, also director of such favorites
as A Christmas Story, Porkys, and uh... Baby Geniuses. It's also been
announced he'll be taking on a remake of Children Shouldn't Play With
Dead Things. Our film begins centered around a sorority during Christmas
break. The girls are made up of a few famous faces including Barb, the wise
cracking' perpetually drunk girl played by Marrgot Kidder (Amityville Horror,
Superman), and our heroine Jessica played by Olivia Hussey (Romeo and
Juliet, Stephen Kings It). The girls begin to get obscene phone calls from
what sounds like several voices. We see right away in the beginning of the
film that there is a mysterious lunatic hanging out in the attic, so all signs
point to him (her?).
Sorority girl Claire soon goes missing, and a search party is formed only to
find a dead teenager in the park. Still no Claire. Jessica finds out she's
pregnant and confronts her seemingly bipolar boyfriend Peter about getting
an abortion. He becomes enraged at the idea and warns Jessica that she
will be very sorry. The calls keep coming' and the plot thickens. I've come
to believe over the years that this movie is only for the serious horror fans.
Everyone else would probably be bored to tears and screaming at the
television screen for walking away with so many unanswered questions.
If you're taking the time to even read this review, something tells me you
are a true horror fan, and you can get over that stuff. First of all, the
obscene phone calls are seriously creepy. If I got a phone call like that I
would shit my pants. Also if you're a big fan of John Saxon, such as I am,
he once again plays a police chief since he tends to be a bit type cast in
that role. But he plays it well as usual. Coupled with true suspense and
hilarious moments, Black Christmas is an unique cut above the horror
movies of it's time, and is most deserving of its cult status.
