Review:
Another remake from Japan also based on the short story ‘Floating water’ by
famed Ring author Koji Suzuki, the whole short story novel actually called Dark
Water. About a newly divorced woman Dahlia trying to deal with her changing life,
having to move and put her daughter in school, get a steady job, and have to
deal with a horrible and abusive past. She finds a great place and the first day
when looking at the apartment her young daughter wonders off to the roof of all
places and finds this red Hello Kitty backpack. The mother does not want her to
have it of course it belongs to another child. They move into the apartment and
soon strange things start to happen and the mother is close to a nervous
breakdown.
I know there were some people who saw this movie said it sucked. But the people
who said were mostly under the age of 20. This movie really is for a more mature
audience. When I say mature I don't mean 'Hey I'm old enough to see an R-
rated movie.' I mean they have made an actual slow thinking judgement. This
movie had the best casting of any Japanese remake that I have ever seen.
Jennifer Connelly did a beautiful job portraying a woman who is just feels she is
going insane and constantly paranoid. The young girl who plays her daughter was
great, and seems very sweet in real life having watched her on Leno. John C.
Reiley is always great. Yeah the original I think was just a bit creepier at some
moments. But if you read the short story you would see that it really wasn’t a
ghost story, there was a small mention of a ghost but only at one point in the
whole story. It was more about how far a parent would go to protect their child.
I saw this movie when I was I don’t know, 7 months pregnant, so yeah the
ending brought a tear to my eye. I really enjoyed it. The movie also just had this
great look, the sky was always gray and every room was dark. I also believed that
it was advertised horribly wrong. They relied too much on the whole ‘From the
writer of The Ring’ so a lot of people went there with high expectations of being
scared. I really wish people hadn’t and I’m sure they would have enjoyed it more.
Just stop going into movies with High expectations and just let yourself be
surprised. It's not as creepy as the original film but still it's a beautiful movie.
