Review:

When you think of Day of the Dead, what usually comes to mind? For me, I
think of zombies, political statements and Bub. I'm sure everybody out
there remembers the straight to DVD release of Taurus Entertainment's
Day of the Dead 2: Contagium. It was made as a sequel to George A.
Romero's zombie film, which followed a group of survivors in underground
tunnels. Like most of Taurus' catalog, Day of the Dead 2 was no more than
a joke. It's exactly like "Creepshow 3" where they took a popular horror
franchise and butchered it by adding in their own material, basically
capitalizing on successful franchises. Both Creepshow and Day are some of
George Romero's most popular genre films. Taurus Entertainment saw this
as a profitable opportunity to make money off of George's name and work.
It's very offensive, and to no surprise both Creepshow 3 and Day of the
Dead 2 sucked. Don't be fooled by the titles. Trust me, these releases are
disgraceful. You'd be a fool to give these guys your money.

The company behind Day of the Dead 2 announced yet another film, only
this one was to be a remake of the original Day of the Dead. Once again,
trying to take credit for Romero's work. Since remakes are a profitable
trend these days, it's not surprising to see that Taurus would go this route
as well. Since they own the rights, I guess it's just more lazy work for
them. After seeing this film for myself, I can confirm something I was
always worried about. This isn't really a remake of George Romero's film.
It's just a low rate zombie film with the same title. Once again, it's the
company's way of making a quick buck. Just like the so called "sequel," this
Day of the Dead rarely pays homage to the original film. As far as taking
credit for someone else's work (or in this case title), this Day of the Dead is
also disgraceful and offensive to those who have a soft spot for the
original. The original film was violent, entertaining and original. This film is,
not so much. It's lazy, annoying and hard to finish let alone watch.

I don't know what's worse: The dialog or Nick Cannons acting. C'mon, are
we really supposed to take this seriously? In the film Cannon tries to come
off as some sort of bad ass, but really he just plays the token black guy
who wont give us the pleasure of shutting his own mouth for the entire
film. I feel sorry for anyone who likes his work. Then again you'd have to be
brain dead to anyway. The humor (much like Cannon's acting) falls flat
almost every single time. The written dialog is equivalent to what you would
see in a Sci-fi channel original movie. In fact, that's where I thought the
movie would end up. After seeing all the trailers and early promotions for
the film I thought it would make its debut on TV. To my amazement, the
company actually tried to market it for the big screen. I'm very proud to
say that it never happened. Perhaps everybody behind the scenes knew
that the movie was a piece of shit so they eventually stopped pushing it.
Lets be honest here, this film has been getting negative flack from the very
beginning. Especially when the trailer first hit the net.

Nobody was happy, so it's amazing to think that they would actually try to
give this crap a wide release. Even with its list of recognizable actors, you
can't disguise garbage as a work of art. It's clichéd and unworthy of its
name. Had they dropped it to a PG-13 rating, I think they could have pulled
off a theatrical release. As much as I hate the film, there are some cons
that will keep you from committing suicide. Sadly, I can only think of one
thing that this film has going for it, and that's Mena Suvari. She's a
talented actress and even for a film like this her actions are very well done.
With her talent, she could do just about anything. She just needs to learn
how to pick the right roles. Since we're on the topic of actors, I'll might as
well talk about Ving Rhames. As much as I love Ving as an actor, he just
doesn't belong here. He was either mis-casted or misplaced. It's very likely
the studio casted him to confuse audiences into believing their low budget
flick was a sequel to the popular Dawn of the Dead remake. It's an
interesting move, but most audiences wont be fooled. Sure Ving is in both
films, but he plays two different characters in two different worlds.

He just didn't seem to fit right with this film. In fact, nothing in this film
seemed to fit right. As much as I disliked the Dawn remake, I would rather
watch that again instead of this. In comparison, the Dawn of the Dead
remake is actually enjoyable. With that said, you MUST avoid this film at all
costs. I'm not saying that because I didn't like it, but because I don't want
to encourage any of you to support this company. Even if you're thinking
about renting it or buying it in the $1 bin, DON'T. Just do us all a favor and
let this one pass. If you're a die hard zombie fan and you have to see this
movie, then I would simply just recommend watching it for free online as
most people do these days. Who knows, you could save some money in
the process. As much as I hate the film, I do think there will be a select few
who will enjoy it. As a stand alone film, Day of the Dead is pretty bad. But,
considering that it's based on another motion picture, that just makes it
even more insulting. It's a bad day to be a zombie fan.
