Review:
Friday the 13th, say it to anyone and the first thing that comes to mind is
Jason, not Pamela Voorhees. The first Friday the 13th was ground breaking
and by far one of the most gory frightening movies of its time, which also
is personal favorite of mine. The story follows a group of young
inexperienced camp councillors as they prepare for the re-opening of Camp
Crystal Lake aka "Camp Blood" decades after a boy drowned and 2
councillors were ruthlessly murdered. Things start to go array as the
councillors start disappearing one by one and the audience soon learns
that a mothers love is the strongest, and most deadly of all.
This movie was in my opinion ahead of its time. Tom Savini provides us
with amazing gore. The cast, although all unknowns at the time delivered a
steady frightening performance. Betsy Palmer as Mrs. Voorhees was a
shock and no one expected her to be a blood thirsty vengeful murderer.
No one also expected her to do it well, but this woman delivers the most
disturbing performance. Jason only appears in the movie for a moment but
it's a moment everyone remembers. I love Friday the 13th and in fact all its
sequels. They are a staple in American horror history that will not ever be
forgotten.
Harry Manfredini set the tone with an amazing musical score to the movie.
The only pitfalls of this movie are that it takes too long for the story to pick
up momentum. There is a significant amount of time in the movie between
the first and second deaths. This time is instead used as filler for the movie
(unimportant, irrelevant scenes). All and all, this movie is a classic, with
amazing gore effects, and some pretty decent acting.
