Review:
You know something, I'm having a hard time calling this a horror movie. Every
week I receive something in the mail. Little to no budget films that dare to push
the limits. The movies that other websites are afraid to touch. Now the movie I'm
reviewing today is like nothing I've ever seen. This feature is mixed with so many
things that I can't narrow it down into a particular genre. The movie I am talking
about is Gone the Way of Flesh. Never have I seen so much music and sexual
content in a horror film. Actually no scratch that, I have seen more sexual content
on a horror film, just not like this. Gone the Way of Flesh contains violence, nudity,
sex, drugs, filth and rock 'n' roll. Sounds great right? Well don't get your hopes
up. Although the gimmick may sound nice, the movie itself isn't nice at all. To be
honest I had mixed feelings on it. There is some good and bad in this slasher, it's
just up to the viewer if they will like it. It's all a matter of taste really. If you're into
low budget movies then this just may be something you'll enjoy if you put aside all
the music.
Gone the Way of Flesh is the story of a mysterious killer with a blood-lust for rock
'n' roll groupies. A local town is outraged as under-aged female fans start turning
up in pieces after live performances by The Jason Martinko Revue. It is up to one
detective to rid his city of this traveling road show of filth, as he struggles to
overcome numerous addictions. As you have just read the movie features the
band The Jason Martinko Revue. Now this is where the movie gets interesting. The
plot surrounds this rock band, and if it were not for the movie trailer I would have
thought of this as a short movie to promote the band. The Jason Martinko Revue
is all over the damn thing. It makes sense since the killer in the movie hunts down
females who attend the band's shows. But if you watch the entire thing you'll
notice that it's part slasher and live performance. This movie alone could easily be a
way of promoting the band. Actually that's how it felt like. Watching Gone the Way
of the Flesh was like watching a promo DVD for a rock band. The movie is filled
with live musical performances. It makes sense with the plot and everything but
you can easily market this as a band movie and get away with it.
This part of the movie is original and interesting to say the least. How often do we
get to see movies like this? You have to look underground to view stuff like this.
This is a low budget movie that actually does something different, why not enjoy a
horror movie with good rock tunes in between? Apparently it was the music that
caught me off guard. The live concert scenes felt out of place. The music is good
I'll admit, but the live concert scenes had me confused as to what I was really
watching. Aside from the concert footage the rest of the movie has the familiar
slasher formula. The lead character provides inside commentary. He also has some
addiction problems. He's a drinker yet he continues to do his job and pursues this
killer. The movie has a nice mixture of blood and nudity. You wont find the MPAA
cutting stuff off of here. This is a slasher movie, and it doesn't shy away from
showing you any gore. It's obviously low budget, but who the hell cares? You
don't need a lot of money to come up with a great scene. The blood and gore in
this movie is actually fun to watch. Not to spoil too much but there is a really cool
meat grinding scene that made me very happy. The death scenes are nice but they
fall victim to one thing, the music.
The background music in the movie makes things very obvious. When you start to
hear the creepy score you know that something bad is going to happen. It runs
like this through the entire movie and makes things way too predictable. It makes
you aware and you just wait there for something to happen. You wont find any
surprises in this movie. Aside from all that, what bugged me the most about the
movie was the ending. I didn't like the ending at all. I felt that it happened way too
fast. Of all the scenes in this movie, the ending just isn't quite right. There are a
lot of scenes in this movie that feel out of place. The ending is just the icing on the
cake. Gone the Way of the Flesh is part slasher, part live rock show. The deaths
scenes are good and the live concert footage is nice even though they felt out of
place. Perhaps it happens too much, I just didn't see what the use for it was. I've
only seen this movie once but I wouldn't mind giving it a second viewing. Maybe I'll
enjoy it more the second time around. I've watched many movies like that where I
enjoy them the more I watch 'em. Gone the Way of Flesh isn't anything ground
breaking but it can be an enjoyable movie. It's all a matter of personal taste. See
this if you enjoy sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll with your carnage.
