Review:

Does Gutterballs bowl a strike? Or does it fall flat in the gutter? Well, the
real answer is entirely up to you. In the movie we follow a massive cast of
characters during a midnight disco bowling tournament. After a "friendly"
game of bowling, fists are thrown and a bunch of obnoxious cocky guys
decide to take revenge on one of the ladies on the opposite team. They
take the female (who's wearing a super short skirt revealing no panties
whatsoever) and begin to rape her inside of the bowling alley. The next
day, both groups gather again for another game. When they enter their
names on the scoreboard, a mysterious player appears on one of the
teams as "BBK." No one knows who BBK is, but they decide to continue
playing thinking that BBK is some sort of glitch. One by one each of the
characters get killed off by a maniac wearing a bowling mask and some
gloves, who uses sharpened pins and other bowling related items as
weapons of destruction. Gutterballs is one of those "hit or miss" kind of
films.

There will be an audience for it considering that there's an audience for
everything. I guess what I'm trying to say is that not everybody is going to
like Gutterballs. To sum up the entire film, I would have to use more than
five words. It's weird, rude, crude, brutal, disturbing, sexy, funny and over
the top. Is that a bad thing? Of course not! I'm one of the many who
actually enjoyed the film. In fact, I found it to be a whole lot of fun, and I'm
even recommending it to all of my friends. There's something for every
horror fan here. Blood, gore, sex, nudity, it should be enough to at least
entertain every die hard horror fan. I think you'd have to be a die hard fan
to love it. This is something that the casual viewers will find hard to
swallow. Gutterballs pays homage to 80's style horror films, which is
perfect since the 80's are my favorite era. From the very beginning
Gutterballs is right in your face. It doesn't shy away from the blood and
gore, even though some of it was a little lazy and bizarre. Don't get me
wrong through, I really enjoyed the film and it's something I would
recommend to just about everyone.

As you would expect from an 80's style horror movie, Gutterballs is filled
with nudity and sex. What makes this film different from the others is that
you don't see bare breast shots first as you would with a typical slasher.
This is one of the few that actually shows bush before boobs. To be fare,
their's also a good amount of male nudity as well. Gutterballs is plagued
with sex and violence. Most of the time it's a mixture of the two. I normally
don't get freaked out while watching movies, but Gutterballs made me turn
my head a few times. I take it the version of the movie I watched will be the
unrated cut, because there is some really sick shit here. If John Waters
made a horror movie, it would be something like this. It was apparent that
the film makers did what they could to push the envelope. Well, it's been
pushed alright, and I can gladly say that I survived the first viewing. At
times it's silly and over the top, but that's part of the enjoyment. Each
death scene gets funnier (and more gruesome) as the film goes along.
You'll find yourself grossed out and laughing at the same time.

Gutterballs may get on a lot of peoples nerves since most of the characters
think with their private parts and resort to sex jokes every 10 minutes.
The acting itself isn't too bad. At times it's a little nerve wrecking, but
there's an excuse for it. This isn't the kind of horror film you take seriously
all the way through. It's a grindhouse style movie which exploits sex, rape
(which goes on for quite a bit) and ridiculous amounts of blood. With that
said, you can't really expect the film to have Oscar worthy acting. The actor
who I thought stood out the most was Dan Ellis. His character runs the
bowling alley, and most of the time he's so god damn funny. The humor
really seemed to fit the actor, which is always a plus. I didn't have a
problem at all with any of the other cast members. In fact, I think they
picked the best group of people for the film. Every character has their
moments. If you're used to 80's slasher then you'd understand this type
of thing. Characters like these aren't written to be sympathetic.

You're expecting them to die, and that's where most of the fun lies. Every
death scene is grizzly and gross in some way. Not all of them are as
intense or fun however. Some death scenes are just plain funny. The
comedic aspects are very apparent and straight forward. My favorite aspect
of the movie was its design. The artwork, the colors, the costumes, the
music and even the bowling alley itself was pure eye candy. Everything
looked as it should, which is great considering that the entire film takes
place in one setting/building. To think that the entire movie is in this dark
bowling alley is really frightening. It heightens the sense of isolation which
therefor intensifies the sense of fear and loss. Having the outside world
absent really helped set the mood. If you're someone who enjoys old
school slasher films, then Gutterballs will be right up your alley. The
violence is there, the humor is there and it has a rockin' soundtrack. Watch
it with an open mind. If you do that, you're guaranteed to have some fun.
It's pure balls to the wall entertainment.
