Review:

The movie industry has a funny way of working today. There isn't much of a
mystery as to why we get such movie releases in the theatre nowadays. While
some companies have a heart and passion for their products others just make
movies or remake old classics with nothing but profit in mind. I'm not saying that
this is all true but that's just what it seems like and the thought of that is what
pisses off the die hard movie viewer. I personally don't have much of a problem with
remaking movies but I do have a problem with companies just doing it for money
with no passion or shame. If you can have heart for your material then you gain my
respect. You can make so many arguments and points from either side whether if
you're for or against movie remakes. Arguing about such a topic doesn't get you
anywhere and you just don't know who's right in the end. It seems that most of
what we get out of horror in the mainstream are either remakes to classics or hit
Asian films. Hollywood isn't the only city that makes movies so if I were to bitch and
complain I would just complain bad mouth the entire system. I'm not against the
principle of remakes, I'm just tired or hearing them being announced.

Luckily I'm not here to review remakes in general, I'm here to talk about an
independent horror feature called the Remake. A film that brings to mind of all the
stuff that we've been getting lately. With such a straight forward title and plot you
would figure that the movie will have its moments right? My answer to that is yes it
sure does. The Remake is a true to the heart slasher movie filled with a good cast
and an overall message toward the film industry of today. The Remake tells the
story of a crew who are at work on a remake of a horror classic film 'Slasher Camp
13'. The cast and crew go out into the woods to plan out some shots and bond
along the way. Hoping to get good chemistry with each other. Sadly it doesn't work
out that way and we are introduced to a cast of young actors along with an evil
movie producer who only thinks of profit. The producer doesn't care for character
development or keeping the spirit of the original film alive, all she expects is to make
a typical slasher movie with teenage kids who do drugs and get killed for it. The film
crew arrive at the woods and they are slowly being stalked by a man dressed in
black who wields a machete.

What struck me most about the film was the actual story. While I disagreed with
some of the views and points that are told in the dialog I did enjoy the idea of a die
hard fanatic trying to stop a film crew from remaking one of his favorite horror
movies. It's a good and original story with plenty of commentary. I knew that we
were going to see a movie like this sooner or later, and now is just the perfect time.
What the Remake has is a good story blended in with a interesting cast of
characters. Some of them by the way are there to piss you off. It shows greatly in
the dialog and I thought they did a great job with the characters. Watching this
movie reminded me of Halloween with the music and some of the shots that are in
the film. The rest of it reminded me of Friday the 13th. The reason for that is
because the movie plays out like an old school slasher film. While watching this you
can easily tell that the creators were inspired by the classics and it carries the same
raw formula that we love. While it feels like an old slasher movie it doesn't get
mediocre or repetitive and it doesn't fall into the obvious and predictable clichés.
Each death scene in the movie gets more bloody and creative along the way.

Although the death scenes are really good the music in the film had me scratching
my head. I enjoyed most of the music but when it starts to get into a death scenes
it just suddenly changes into hard rock and back again after the scene is finished. It
might be just me but I found those parts of the movie to be too much. Other than
that everything else is good and I found the Remake to be a really good watch.
When the film ends you can tell that the people who made this sure do have a
problem. I really don't blame them, there are thousands of fans out there who feel
the same way. As much as I don't mind movie remakes I will admit that I'm just sick
of hearing about them. We've seen movie remakes and other novel adaptations
from day one. Only today we're just seeing more of them. It's just you opinion
whether if you agree with the statements or not. If you want to see something
different then I highly recommend seeing what's going on in the underground
market. Or better yet check out the stuff that we get overseas.

I have my own personal opinion towards movies in general and what I thought
worked most in the Remake is the commentary in the dialog. Much like a George
Romero film you'll hear plenty of thought provoking dialog. While I disagree with
most of it they sure do make some very interesting points. Overall this is a movie I
definitely recommend watching. I thought the Remake was well done and well
scripted. There are no Oscar worthy performances here but that's just one of the
joys of watching an independent film. The Remake is a good watch and it's one of
the best independent films I've laid my eyes on. The story is good and it's fun and
enjoyable to watch. I loved the fact that it reminded me of the old school 80's
slashers. We really need more movies like this. If you're into seeing movies that pay
tribute to the genre it's presented on then I urge you to see the Remake. It's
enjoyable from start to finish and I thought the ending couldn't have been any
better.
