Review:
I haven't laughed so hard watching a horror film in such a long time. I remember
hearing about this film a couple of years back and from the look of the pictures and
other bits of information that were available it didn't really seem to impress me. I've
matured and learned a lot since then and it's just no good to judge a picture before
you see it. Sadly it wasn't until I heard that Universal was planning to give this a
theatrical release that I started to think that maybe it's much better then the look
and the overall plot. The story behind this film sounded too much like other
previous horror films. Like the old Sci-Fi horror films we've seen in the past, most
obvious being Night of the Creeps. The good thing about Slither is that it's not a
rip off of other films movies, it's more of a film that pays homage to the 80's era of
horror films. Although you may notice tons of similarities to other movies it's more
of a way to pay tribute to the classics.
Slither tells the story of a meteor that crashes somewhere in the forest of this small
town. Nobody notices it or is aware that something is slithering in the woods. Grant
Grant, one of the main characters in the film gets drunk one night and walks into
the woods with a fellow companion. While in the woods they stumble upon a small
unknown creature from another planet. Sadly Grant gets shot by the little creature
and it begins to control his brain and mutate inside of him. As he goes back home
his wife soon notices that he's starting to change. His thirst for meat and love
grows as the creature begins to mutate inside of Grant. Soon after that he begins
to mutate the rest of the town. Spawning little worm like creatures that turn people
into zombies if they get inside of the mouth and infect the brain. As the town
begins to fall apart it's up to Grant's wife Starla and the remaining survivors to try
and stop this terrible plague.
This film definitely reminded me of the old school science fiction monster movies
from the past. Much like the ones with that featured giants bugs and other nasty
insects. Those sci-fi horror classics have a special place in my heart and seeing this
film brought back the same thrill and fun as the old movies. This film starts off
much in the spirit of an old science fiction comic book. Although the plot sounds
really familiar it's not meant to be a "rip of" of anything. What the movie
successfully does is that it fits in nasty bloody horror and humor. Slither is a nice
balance between a horror film and a comedy. I thought the comedic aspect of the
picture worked out very well. The joy of the film came from the characters and all
the funny one liners. There are plenty of jokes and funny dialog in the movie. I will
admit though, the movie does start off kind of slow. You pretty much already know
what to expect so you may be sitting there listening to the dialog and getting to
know the characters more as you wait for the actual story to pick up.
Once the action starts that's when the real horror begins. You start to see some
nasty changes with some of the characters and you get to see some of slithering
bug like creatures. You also get to see a bunch of meat hungry zombies. Early on in
the film we're treated with a few cameo appearances. One from the director,
another from Troma creator Lloyd Kaufman and an even shorter one from Rob
Zombie who you just hear over the phone. Watching the movie Slither is like
watching a cheesy (but fun) science fiction film. It's filled with blood, gore and tons
of laughs. I haven't laughed so hard watching a horror film since Shaun of the
Dead. The joy of it all is with the dialog and characters. The horror aspect of the
picture is also lovable. There is plenty of zombie related blood and gore in the
movie. You get to see a bunch of flesh eating and even a head shot or two. There
are also a bunch of scenes in the movie that just seem too bizarre and gross from
a normal point of view. This film does have a bunch of creatures and other things of
that nature so you can just imagine how far they can push the reality rule.
If I were to sum up Slither in one word I would have to pick 'fun'. I had so much fun
watching this movie. I enjoyed the science fiction aspect of it and I loved the
humor. Some of it felt unneeded and it gets over the top in parts, but its good
none the less. The humor is blended in well with the horror and the characters are
great. I haven't had so much fun watching a horror film in quite a while and Slither
is good right up to the end credits. The dialog and overall feel of the picture
reminded me so much of the Sci-fi horror classics. If you're into films like Shaun of
the Dead or Night of the Creeps then you'll definitely enjoy Slither. It's a fun watch
and it may have you laughing your ass off. It's got plenty of blood and gore for
those of who want to see a horror film and it's also got plenty of humor to keep
you comfortable. If you plan to see this movie I highly suggest inviting a bunch of
friends and grab a large bag of gummy worms. Slither is just down right hilarious.
